Save the Chimps, Inc. (STC) was founded in 1997 to provide sanctuary for 21 space chimps formerly used by the United States Air Force. In 2002, STC acquired property owned by the Coulston Foundation and responsibility for the 266 chimpanzees being held captive there. The rescue of the chimpanzees from the Coulston Foundation, a biomedical research facility with the worst record of primate care in the history of the Animal Welfare Act, remains the largest and most successful rescue effort on behalf of chimpanzees. It is arguably, the single most important victory to date in efforts to protect great apes.
The New Mexico facility was modified from a stark and grim environment into a healthier and happier one better suited for the chimpanzees now in their care, including, for the first time in their lives, fresh food, enlarged cages, enrichment activities, compassionate caregivers and, most importantly, the establishment of social groups. Chimpanzees, which were previously isolated, are introduced to one another and allowed to form family units, for the first time in their lives.
The Florida sanctuary, the most chimp-centric in the world allows chimpanzees to live in family groups on 12 separate three to five acre islands, where they can socialize and rebuild confidence shattered by decades spent in isolation. The chimpanzee migrations are newsworthy events and have been covered by the New York Times, CNN and other national and international media organizations.
In the United States over one thousand chimpanzees still languish inside research laboratories, many living alone with no windows, no sunlight, no friends and no hope. For nearly three hundred chimpanzees, STC has replaced the pain, hunger, loneliness and fear with comfort, safety, companionship and love.
